CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago is putting $500,000 towards increasing access to abortion, especially for people of color and poor residents.

The announcement came Monday (May 9) from Mayor Lori Lightfoot, following a leaked draft opinion indicating the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and end the national right to legal abortion.

According to Lightfoot, the funds will be directed to providers, plus organizations such as the Chicago Abortion Fund and Midwest Access Coalition. Those organizations offer assistance to individuals seeking abortions.

This isn’t just for Chicago residents, either. The funding will be available for Chicago residents and any U.S. citizen. According to the Mayor’s Office, Illinois has been getting more people from other states seeking abortions, since it’s surrounded by states that have restricted access.
