If you’ve been putting off your taxes, the time has finally come to get them in. This year, the tax filing deadline is Monday, April 18. For the past two years, the IRS extended the tax filing deadline because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but that ended in 2022.

The deadline is Monday at midnight. If you need more time, you can file an extension and have until Oct. 17, 2022, to turn in your taxes.

Those who need more time can still file an extension. This will allow taxpayers to file until October 17.

If taxpayers don’t request an extension by April 18, they could get slapped with a “failure to file” penalty. That would result in a penalty rate of 5% on unpaid taxes for each month that taxes are unfiled.

This year’s average refund is projected to be more than $3,200.
