Academy officially condemns Will Smith’s conduct at Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday (March 28) that it was beginning a formal review of what happened between Will Smith and Chris Rock during Sunday’s Oscar Awards ceremony.

“The academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,” the academy said in a statement. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.”

Smith released a statement regarding the incident Monday, stating writing, “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

The academy’s code of conduct states that their board is allowed to suspend or expel people who violate the code of conduct or “compromise the integrity” of the academy.

The incident happened during the show, when Rock joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Rock stated he was looking forward to a sequel to “G.I. Jane,” referring to her shaved head. It’s known that Pinkett Smith shaved her head after dealing with with alopecia.

Following the comment, Smith walked on the state to Rock and slapped him. After Smith sat down, he yelled to Rock twice, “keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth.” Needless to say, people were shocked at what they just witnessed on national television. Later in the show, Smith scored his first-ever Oscar for best actor in the movie “King Richard.”
