There’s no guarantee that Michigan students will receive free meals for the upcoming school year. Congress hasn’t given approval to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to continue providing free breakfast and lunch to all students.

For the past two years, all students were allowed to get free breakfast and lunch, no matter their household income. The past couple of years, all students qualified for free meals due to the pandemic.

If you want free meals for your child, the smartest thing to do is contact your local school district and apply for free and reduced-cost lunches. Do this as soon as possible. Even if you aren’t a low-income household, you should apply, since some middle-income households qualify.
