These Are the Most Popular Dog Names of 2023

They say a dog is a man’s best friend, and now, we have the tally of popular names for that beloved companion.

Luna or Max were the top names in 2022 for female and male dogs, according to the American Kennel Club. The organization put together a list of most popular dog names by analyzing its purebred dog registration and Canine Partner mixed-breed enrollment statistics.

Coming up with a name for a new pet can be a major ask. “Dogs are an important part of our families, and people take great care in choosing a name,” American Kennel Club executive secretary Gina DiNardo said in a statement. “It’s fun to see if a dog’s personality is reflected in its name.”
