These Are the Most Popular Christmas Songs in the U.S.

‘Tis the season for Christmas music. It’s pretty much inescapable this time of year. Now, the folks at FinanceBuzz.com have researched the most popular holiday songs in each state, to determine the most popular Christmas song of the moment in America.

For the study, FinanceBuzz.com looked at the 25 highest-charting holiday songs, according to Billboard, from Christmas week 2020 and analyzed search results to crown the most popular song for each state.

So, what’s No. 1? According to the study, “Feliz Navidad” was the most popular song in 11 states in 2020, more than any other holiday song. The festive tune was released in 1970 by Jose Feliciano and has bilingual lyrics in Spanish and English.

The next most popular holiday song was “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” which was a favorite in eight states. As expected, many of those state were in colder climates, such as Alaska, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, where is usually does snow on Christmas. That track dates back to 1945, when Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn write the song in July, a month that rarely sees any of the white stuff. Vaughn Monroe and the Norton Sisters recorded the original version of the song in 1945, and it’s been covered by a number of artists since then, including Ella Fitzgerald and and Bing Crosby.

The third most popular Christmas songs in America were “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” tied. Four states picked those songs as their favorites. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” was released by Andy Williams in 1963. In it, Williams sings of Rudolph saving the holidays.

Songs that were only popular in one state included “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” (Ohio), “White Christmas” (Idaho) and “(There’s No Place Like) Home for the Holidays” (Pennsylvania). Find the full list of the most popular Christmas songs in each state here.
